As a result of graduating from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) however, after experiencing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75) I'm an advocate of education that integrates studying the arts along with studies in many other disciplines. It's not surprising that an ethnomusicologist who has a PhD and MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. It is not surprising that the department of ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is located in the College of Letters and Science's department of music. It's fun to pursue diverse subjects. It is also fun to see the bigger perspective. Both undergraduates and graduate students (for whom I wrote three textbooks - Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experience Music: Expressing Cultural Expression) are enthused by my teaching. I have periods where I'm mostly a Professor, as well as other time periods in which I work in the administrative department (such as being Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988 and Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998, as well as Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science in 1994-98).
